0w readings with GEM and dual micro-50's

Post by garbled » Thu Apr 25, 2013 3:01 am

I have a GEM, com firmware 2.13, ENG1 firmware 1.41. I purchased micro 50's and 100's for it.

For all my single 120V circuits, it works just fine. I have a pair of split 200's on the mains, and am getting reasonable values from them too.

My 240V circuits though, are another story. For each one, I wired a M-50 to each wire coming out of the breaker. It seems no matter what I do, I get readings of 0 on those channels. If I try using just one of the two CT's, I still get 0 values. I've tried moving them to other working channels, and get 0's. I'm wiring them to pins 2,3 just like the other M50's. I wasn't sure if they used a neutral or not, so I went with 2 CT's for each.

What am I doing wrong here? Is there something specific I have to setup?

If this circuit is a 240 device with out a neutral. You will need to go to the CT Settings and select 1CT / 240. If there are two on the circuit you will select 2CT /240. Its best to use one as it saves you a extra CT and let the software double the values for you.

I believe if you select 1CT / 240 there will be a value of 1 that will show afterwards confirming the change has been done. Ben had mentioned when you selected 2CT / 240 that number 1 was not showing up in the column correctly.

It may have been corrected in this latest firmware.

Also, if you have two CT's and you get zero. Reverse the leads on one CT, as it may be canceling each other out.

When you say to select 1/240 vs 2/240, what program is that in? Right now I'm just observing the values printed by the GreenEyeSetup utility.

As it is, I think I've solved the issue. I was very careful to install all my CT's facing the same way. I think it turns out, that on some of these dual-pole devices, you want to install the second CT (if using one) in reverse. I went around and carefully reversed one CT on each of my DP devices (except the spa, stove, and oven, oddly) and I started getting sane results out of them. What threw me was not all of them needed this reversal.

As an aside, does anyone know what the correct settings for a Micro-50 and Micro-100 are when setting up the GEM? I think there is an odd bug in the setup utility v 2.8, as when I select a micro-50 and re-read the config, it says I have a micro-80. What are the manual values for the 50 and 100?

Of course, when I got sane numbers out of my water heater and dryer, I fainted. :)

Micro 50/80 are the same and should show up as Type: 210, Range: 4. To change the 1CT/240 please use the GEM's internal web page as its easier and faster to complete these tasks. As you noted even if you look at the striped wire coming off of the CT and even if you *orientate* the CT to ensure the arrow is pointing toward the current flow.

The flow could still be wrong. Hence why you will eye ball the actual readings and simply make the changes on the wires manually to obtain the readings.

I have appended a screen capture of what the *GEM Internal Web Page* looks like and where to change the value(s).

Please let me know if you need more help.

Ha. I'm too technical for my own good. The first thing I did when I fired it up was telnet to port 80. When I saw the raw data, I assumed it didn't have a web setup. The web setup was much easier. Thank you.

Are you now using one CT, or Two? I personally opted to use only one CT and let the GEM double the values for me. That allowed me to have extras on hand for future expansion. More money saved in the long run!

I'm using two. The CT's were pretty cheap, and I'm loathe to rewire the panel itself. On some of the wires, they are 8ga, so I'd have to go out and buy 100's to deal with those, so I'll just adjust the settings until the values become sane, and live with it. A little money wasted, but I learned something. I'll remember this when I order another GEM for my guest house this fall.
