QUIZ

If you could power your home using banks of 9 Volt batteries, how much would it cost?

YOUR ANSWER:  4. Approximately $ 426,000.00/month.   CORRECT!                   Back

Based on specifications for a popular brand of batteries, an industrial alkaline battery will supply 625mA for one hour which would consume its life. This amounts to 0.005625 KWh per battery.

To obtain 1,200 KWh of energy (monthly requirement) 213,300 batteries would be required. The total monthly cost would be:  $426,600.00

If it takes 1 minute to unpack and replace each battery, it would require 5 people working 24/7 just for replacing batteries!

Now, do you have a new appreciation for what we pay for electrical energy?

Back

Some years ago, someone was telling me how they were conserving energy at home.

In the evening, the family would sit in the living room with the TV and lights off. They would each use a flashlight to read books.

If you don't understand energy, this may make sense. Now we can see that  this technique cost them thousands of times more money than they saved.

Since power = V * I the total watt-hour from one battery is:   9V * 0.625 = 5.625 watt-hr or .005625kwh

Number of batteries required to generate 1,200 kWh = 1200 / .005625 =  213,300 batteries

Total cost of energy? 213,300 batteries @ $2 ea = $426,600.00
