If the "data hosting" PC is running the Engine software, an option is provided to forward data to a "home automation" system such as CQC ( http://www.charmedquark.com ), HomeSeer© and others (this is based on existing third party plug-ins).
This may be done independently of running the Dashboard or forwarding to other services such as Google PowerMeter™.

ECM-1240 data packets are sent directly to a PC connected to a network using the computer's RS-232 or USB port. The Engine software forwards the data to the Home Automation System. NOTE: The dashboard and server software is not required for forwarding data to a HA system.
OR

ECM-1240 data packets are sent to a PC via a TCP/IP network connection using an EP-1 (wired) or EB-1 (wireless) gateway. The Engine software forwards the data to the Home Automation System. NOTE: The dashboard and server software is not required for forwarding data to a HA system.
It is also possible to forward data from the engine software to the www.check-it.ca data hosting service to take advantage of the may features they offer.
