Spam

Post by Teken » Wed Nov 06, 2013 7:37 am

Last year old posts were coming back up for no apparent reason. It looks like a few spammers are replying to old threads for what ever reason.

Is there a report function on the Brultech site?

Yeah, spammers seem to be slipping through right now. I clear them out every morning.

Not sure why last night there were so many spam posts. But, 5-6 of them have been removed. Is there not an option in the forum to enable captcha challenge codes? :?:

I believe this would help reduce the amount of spam.

Hello Ben

You are getting high volume of SPAM right now

Here are some numbers, From Nov 21st 13h44 until now you have 90 + new registration on the forum and it is still counting as i write this message. An average of 4.5 new registration/hr.
Since i began writing this message 5 new registrations have came in.
I don't know how old is that phpBB BBS software but looking at the copyright date at bottom of page it is an outdated version. If you don't have Captcha then your only option right now
is to enable the validation option so every new user need to get validated before they can post.

At the rate those Russian and Italian are getting in it is a matter of days or month before you lose control of the forum.

I know what i have talking.
In the early day of Satellite TV I stater up a couple Discussion Forums that i ran for almost 15 years and was also moderator of other forums. It went well until Spammer got in.
I did not have Captcha on that software and by the time i found out the Forum was unusable and i had to close it.

We have to much valuable info in this forum and we cant afford to lose that.

SO Please Enable the Email Validation and change the Banner message when a new user register with something like this" We are sorry to enable email validation for registration as we are getting to many spams. Sorry for the Delay"
Until you either upgrade the phpBB.

The best way to get around this is that you must get help from volunteer (Moderator) to get rid of part of this. I am sure we can have some volunteer that are often on the Forum that could look at these registration and kill them and kill their message.

I volunteer to be a moderator as i have run a forum for more than 15 years.

Together lets get these Spammer out of our valuable forum.

By the way the Forum is still at Daylight time as i wrote that message at 08h12

Thank Teken
but still this board is really outdated

Latest phpBB release is now 3.0.12 and this board is running a March 2010 version about 5 rel behind.

I think is the time to upgrade and get the Captcha enable.

The question ask for new registrant is more than easy to get they answer. I got the answer in the question itself.

You should also delete the users from the database unless you locked them up.

Since my last post 4 new registrations.!!

Daniel,

When spam is removed this also deletes the users account.

Ya but they are still showing in the Members area? Should they disappear too?

Doesn't delete members, but blocks their IP and deletes all their posts.

Upgrading is easier said then done, would likely have to spend a few hours on that and hope that it all goes well.

Enabled ReCAPTCHA for now, and set the anti-spam mod I have installed to be more aggressive.

Ben don't attempt to upgrade now as there is issues upgrading from 3.0.7 PL1 to 3.0.12 as you may screw up all the forum as somebody else did.
https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=2210781

My suggestion is the following try everything offline.
I do that all the time when i am upgrading my IP Phone System servers. I always do a carbon copy in LAB of customer server and once everything is fine then i do it on the Customer live server and i know i will not get into problems and i avoid down time.

i already have 3.0.12 installed on my test server.
I will install 3.0.7-PL1 also tonight

Then if you could do a backup on you actual forum and send me the ZIP backup
i will restore in the offline 3.0.7-PL1 and attempt upgrade until it is success full
then i will give you the recipe to do it. That way everything can be test outside the actual Live Forum.

How about that or we can get in touch and we can do it on my test server
