Hi,

First... I love my GEM... what a great device.

Problem... ocassionally (like one a week or once every two weeks) the WiFi link between the GEM and my router breaks. My fix is to cycle power to the GEM to get it to relink.

The GEM is the WiFi/Ethernet version.

Questions:

(1) If I go the hardwire route will this make the link much more reliable?

(2) Pulling a cable will be hard. Is there something different I can do with the WiFi setup to make the link more robust?

(3) I'm not a network guy, but a dude in the office who has a ECM-1240 (and loves his device too) and knows networks said something about changing from DHCP to fixed IP. Would this be a better first option vice pulling cable and reconfiguring for ethernet?

Thanks in advance.

What firmware are you using on the GEM? Several COM / Engine releases have corrected some of these issues.

What your friend is telling you is he believes the device is dropping off due to the lease time. The GEM should have a static address assigned per the users manual.

Please set a static address for both the Ethernet and Wireless and you should be good to go. Again, if you have not updated the GEM's firmware and this is related to that.

It should resolve that issue, please report back.

If all else fails, you can experiment with the COM1 Auto Reset setting, it'll force the WiFi/Ethernet module to reset every so often. We haven't had any issues when using the auto reset.

Thank you for your advice.

I can't figure out how to "talk" to the GEM to answer your question about firmware version. I've got the GEM sending data to the SEG site. How do I reconnect to the GEM? Do I start with the factory reset procedure that I originally followed in the manual and rebuild from there?

Also, where do I check for the setting related to COM restart? I don't recall seeing that during setup.

Re: Static vs. DHCP... I followed the install procedure in the manual... so it must be set to static.

Thank you for your patience with me on this. I appreciate your help.

So I'm trying to find out the COM version per the question I was asked above. I forgot to jot a note on this in my manual.

I think I am stuck at this step...

"Once the GEM starts sending to ... SEG... you will no longer be able to access the GEM setup page unless you set the WiFi/Ethernet module back to server mode and change to port number to something other than 80..."

So I successfully set the GEM up to send to SEG a couple of months ago and the GEM is currently shown there as "online". (What a great site SEG is! Coworkers are amazed!) So I've got to set the WiFi/Enet module back to server mode.

How do I set the WiFi/Ethernet module back to server mode? Factory reset and start the setup process again? I can't find discern this step from the manual. It's probably there but I don't fully understand what I'm reading.

Thank you in advance!

Good morning Joe,

1. You will need to use the 5.9 GEM Network Utility program located here: http://www.brultech.com/home/software/i ... etsoft/1/1

2. Once you install this tool and have populated the GEM's IP address and port number for TCP Client which is under the Ethernet Only tab.

At the very bottom is a another box (Ethernet Mode) with the three options, one of which is the Server Mode selection.

3. Select the Save Settings to the right.

4. Confirm the options and entries you have inputted have been saved by selecting the Search. If the GEM is programmed with your options and settings they will appear in the window along with all the networking attributes.

Please let me know if you require more insight or guidance.

Hello Joe,

I noticed I missed some of your outstanding questions so please let me try it one more time!

1. Using the same 5.9 GEM Network Utility Tool under the Firmware Tab. Will allow you to see all of the GEM's settings and COM / Engine firmware levels. Once you're in the firmware tab select Open under the Connections, the system will turn green indicating communications to the device.

To the left is the Get GEM Info tab with the GEM icon. Selecting that tab will request that the GEM reply back with the settings and parameters for the unit. You will be able to see the various details that pertain to your device.

2. The COM1 Auto Reset is found in the GEM's internal setup website. You will enter the internal web page by simply entering the units IP address / port number. Once inside the GEM's setup page select Adv (Advanced) you will see the box which Ben speaks of. I have appended a screen shot for your review below.

As an aside, all of the GEM's parameter are also displayed at the top right of the GEM's Setup Web Page. I have provided a screen shot of mine below also for your review.

The WiFi/Ethernet modules web interface should always be available via Port 80 as long as it's connected to the network.

Steps to build a reliable Network.

#1. Try to run physical wire to device.
#2. Try harder to run a physical wire to device.
#3. Try even harder to run the wire. Hope you're not on a boat, is it docked then run a wire.
#4. See Rule #1.

Granted Wireless networks do work however, they are considered Un-Reliable networks when dealing with real time TCP/IP devices like GEM. The response time between two wired devices will always be faster than wireless.
