Getting Started

Post by priebed » Thu Apr 25, 2013 10:49 pm

Ok, so I got my Greeneye monitor, and am getting an electrician to open up the panel tomorrow to connect all the CT's. I have a couple questions though starting with the beginning, and how I configure what I've got.

First, I've been connecting to the web page on the controller using a DHCP address. The first thing I notice is that the page doesn't show properly all the time, and I often need to hit refresh in the browser to show the page correctly.

Next, I tried to set an IP address, and when I click "save", it seems the address is just ignored.

The next thing I noticed so far is that while I downloaded and installed the GEM Network utility, but when I try to launch it on my windows 7 computer, I get the error Run-time error 13. Type mismatch.

Any suggestions on these?

Hello & Congrats!

I would offer the following to you. Let your router assign a IP address to the GEM. Once that IP address has been issued by the router. Lock that IP address to the MAC address of the GEM. You could simply assign a static IP address to the GEM and that is fine.

The benefit of locking the IP address to the MAC address of the GEM is that it allows any network related routing to be updated with out issue.

Next, if you're trying to do any networking in the GEM's internal web page, don't. That networking page is still being developed and is not intended to configure the GEM's network attributes.

You can use either the EtherX tool or the GEM Network Utility to configure the device. Ignore the run time error that pop up. Its some bug in the application but doesn't impact its use as far as I can tell.

With respect to the GEM's internal *Web Page* sometimes you will need to refresh or open / close the page again. The one key thing to note is that no matter what you do please ensure you select the *Exit Setup* upon completion.

Failure to do so can leave the GEM in a locked state for about 15 minutes. If you have more questions please let me know and I will try to help out.

The only exception to this is the WiFi-only GEM model, which has to use the internal website. It's basically functional with the Ethernet and WiFi versions, but it doesn't dynamically load the boxes

Patience is key here, you're best off waiting for each page to fully load before doing anything.

We're working on an update that allows the GEM to run at a higher baud-rate effectively speeding up how fast the GEM spits out each page.

Is the program still operational after?

I get the error each time I launch the application. It doesn't seem to impact anything so I just ignore it. That might be the reason why I only use the EtherX tool as it simply just works and has all the network configurations tools I need to make the global changes to the GEM with out fault.

Very weird, have you updated to the latest (3.1)?

Can't get it to come up on any of our computers.

Yes I did and it has no impact on the error message appearing. I haven't noticed it doing anything bad or impacting the tool though. But, to be honest I have used it only to make network changes so can't comment on if its affecting other aspects of the tool.

For your reference I am running Windows 7 Ultimate.

Thanks for your replies, I'm getting further but have a few more questions.

First,
Lock that IP address to the MAC address of the GEM. You could simply assign a static IP address to the GEM and that is fine.
Unfortunately with the router I"m using right now I can't do a DHCP reservation, so I just left it at the dynamic address. Since it's always online it should never get a different one anyway.

About the Network utility, I re-downloaded it and maybe it was a new version or something, but I don't get the run-time error anymore. Since it just changes the network settings I didn't explore much further.

I've found the Java utility works the best, and that's what I"m using to configure all the CT's, but have a couple questions on it.

First, I set channel 1 as a split-200, but it switches to show split 400 when I save. Is that normal? I do have 2 split 200's connected on that channel, one on each leg of the panel.

The other thing I noticed initially was that the voltage showing may not have been correct on the mains as it seemed way too low for what I turned on (geo-thermal furnace). We had the first CT wired on pins 1-2, and the second one on 3-4. We then tried switching the wires on 1 and 2, and the watts now seem to be closer, but the mains never seem to show less than about 700 watts, so I'm still not sure. Could I have something else wrong?

The next thing was that since I have all Micro-50's, I set that on all the rest of the channels, but when i save they automatically switch to Micro-80's. Does this affect the reading at all?

Also, I can't seem to find instructions on how to set the type and range settings for each channel other than that I should minus 1 from the range when I have a single CT monitoring at 240 volt load that does not have use the neutral. My Geo is connected with two circuits like this, one for the heat pumps, and one for the electric coil backup, so I set this on these channels but I'm not sure if this is correct. They now show type 211 range 3.

The other one I wanted to confirm is a double breaker that my electrician wired for the lights on the main floor of the house. This channel seems to show less watts when I turn on one of the lights instead of the watts going up. I do have 2 CT's wired together in parallel on this channel, and I was careful to match the white stripes, but I'm guessing I still need to switch the wires on one of the CT's. Would this be correct?

Finally, I tried to set the upload to SEG, and I get a little furthe today as it says it finds the site (which I've called house), but it can't find the device. Any suggestion s here?

Thanks,
Teken

I don't believe that is normal but Ben can confirm if this is the case. I would double check to make sure that the two split 200 CT's are first wired into the correct ports in the GEM. Split CT's should be plugged into 1-2, 3-4.

All of this is much easier to complete and perform in the GEM's internal web page.

We had the first CT wired on pins 1-2, and the second one on 3-4. This error is more than likely due to the fact the 240 supplies are not programmed into the GEM. Please ensure any 240 devices are enabled in the GEM. You have two options based on your install.

If you have only 1CT on that channel you will go into the GEM's internal web page and select 1CT / 240. If you're using two CT's for that channel you will select 2CT / 240.

The next thing was that since I have all Micro-50's, I set that on all the rest of the channels, but when i save they automatically switch to Micro-80's. Does this affect the reading at all?
Both Micro 50 / 80 have the same values which you should see as:Type 210, Range 4
Also, I can't seem to find instructions on how to set the type and range settings for each channel
If you're using the Java Setup Tool. You do not need to populate the box's unless there is some fine tuning needed. Simply selecting the type of CT will set the correct type / range. To confirm this you will see on the right side of the different channels and their respective settings.

other than that I should minus 1 from the range when I have a single CT monitoring at 240 volt load that does not have use the neutral. My Geo is connected with two circuits like this, one for the heat pumps, and one for the electric coil backup, so I set this on these channels but I'm not sure if this is correct. They now show type 211 range 3.
I would ask you to perform this task in the GEM's internal web site. You will have the ability to select the channel, and the 1CT / 240 or 2CT / 240. Once saved you will see a value of 1 in the column for that channel.
Yes, one of the CT's are wired backwards. Simply remove one and the readings will reflect the load accurately.

Thanks,
Login to the GEM's internal website. Once there go to the *Packet Send tab. You will notice two available channels. Select the *Primary Packet Format* 14.

Ben has created this format to do most of the discovery and settings in the GEM to be pushed to the SEG site. Below I have provided the screen captures as to what you will see.

Please note in the one screen capture mine says 6: SEG Format. This is the old format prior to the updates from Brultech.

You will select from the drop down box format 14 New SEG Format/Feb2013. You must also ensure that your GEM is set up to send to the SEG. Below I have also provided you a screen capture of the settings.

I just checked something in the latest set up tool v2.8 The tool does indicate that the following CT values are these:

Micro 40: Type 211, Range 4
Micro 50: Type 210, Range 4
Micro 80: Type 212, Range 3

Ben will need to confirm for you if the values will affect the readings in large range.

Split CT: 100, 200, 400 = Type 231, Range 2 <-- These all appear to be the same now?
