Finally making it back...

Post by Tirnanah » Tue Sep 16, 2014 7:25 pm

So I've been away for a quite some time due to work, family, all the important things, and have just realized how far behind I am with my GEM updates... I am currently running COM 1.70 and Engine 1.40. The most recent I've seen is 3.16 and 1.49.

Part of the reason I'm hesitate to upgrade is that right now everything is just working great. BTMON forwards to both SEG and my SQL server with no problems... However, I've seen some new features that might be useful...

Am I going to lose anything upgrading? I've seen that I have to reboot the GEM between each upgrade, which is not a big deal... Just a long way between the version I'm on and the version I'll be going to...

Any advice before I start pushing buttons?

Thanks,
Doug

Finally making it back...

Hello Doug,

NOTE: You need to follow the special procedure before doing the below steps. This information is listed in the general section listed in this link: http://www.brultech.com/community/viewt ... f=12&t=659

If you're happy where you are, just stay put.

If you feel the upgrade is worth it ensure you have the latest GEM network tool v6.0.

Upgrade the COM before the Engine firmware. When you perform the firmware upgrade under the general tab ensure you change the system from normal to firmware mode but leave the baud rate at 115200.

When you toggle over to the firmware tab you have two choices at that point.

Leave the system at 115200 baud when loading the COM firmware. Once done you can change the baud rate to 19200 baud to load the Engine firmware.

The system will prompt you to do it anyways. Once it finishes it will soft boot.

Ensure you change the baud rate back to 115200, and return the system back to normal from firmware mode.

When it comes back up you can then do the hard boot.

Done!

I would do the following to avoid frustration.

- unplug the unit.
- hold down the button at the bottom.
- plug it back in.
- drop the baud rate on the communication module to 19200.
- load the firmware in recovery mode (don't click any buttons besides selecting the firmware and start, in 1.70 it'll try to interpret any incoming data as firmware and you'll have to start at step 1 again).

Once it's back up.

- set the comm. module to 115200.
- try a Get GEM Info.
- if that works, make sure your hardware option is set correctly.
- click the 19200 button
- load the ENG firmware.

Finally, if you can't communicate after that, make sure your baud rate is set back to 115200 on the comm. module.

If you get stuck at any step in terms of communication, check the baud rate. The new firmware defaults to 115200 on COM1 by default.
