How many jumpers wires can be installed in GEM?

Post by Teken » Mon Dec 23, 2013 9:13 am

Hello All,

I wanted to ask how many jumper wires can be installed into the GEM on ports 1 & 2. I believe there are 5 installed now.

The other day I noticed a low power draw on channel 25 which monitors the dryer. The actual breaker was turned off and there was a fluctuating draw of 1-3 watts. After installing the jumper to the burden resistor all was fine and it now reads 0 watts.

For testing purposes I installed another jumper wire to channel 29. This circuit monitors the secure room which houses all of the network infrastructure and force protection for the security system.

The ISY is programmed to monitor the high / low voltage of the electrical grid. Upon inserting the jumper wire the ISY fired off email alerts of a low voltage detect of 115 VAC. This continued for the whole 3-4 minutes that the jumper was installed? :?:

1. Is there a maximum of jumpers that can be installed into the system? If so how may?

2. If not, why did the GEM indicate a low voltage detection of below 115 VAC? Please note the value of 115 VAC is what I have set the ISY to monitor. So this threshold could have been anything below 115 VAC.

3. The reason I have installed the jumper is to trouble shoot the random power spikes that seem to be present in a few channels. These spikes never show up on the DB or GEM. But, they do show up on the ISY but only via monitored alert notifications. These spikes are not seen or captured in the ISY console at all.

Any insight and a solution would be great on this.

We'll have to do some testing here, jumpering should have no affect on the voltage readings.

Do the same values show up on the Dashboard or the Live Data page?

Ben,

There are two issues here I believe. One being adding a the jumper and that action caused the GEM to freak out.

The other is understanding why the jumper needed to be added so late in the install? The dryer channel has never had any issues. All of the sudden power was seen in the Dash Box, ISY, GEM, etc.

What kind of CT are you using on the dryer channel?

The voltage could just be an issue with the ISY packet, if the voltage is reflected on the DashBox also we'll have more information to go off of.

The dryer is using a M40 CT on channel 25. This channel has never had any readings before. Again this was seen on the DB, GEM, and ISY.

I don't know if the voltage was seen on the DB as I was trying to remove the jumper wire as the 99999999999 e-mails came streaming in!

Ahh, yeah. If it was running for more than a minute, the DashBox should have the average over that minute.

Any CTs installed recently on any other channels?

Nothing has been added or changed since the install almost a year ago. So, I gather based on your reply the GEM does not have a limit to the amount of jumpers that can be inserted?

Correct, and it definitely shouldn't have an affect on the voltage.

If you're having a lot of issues though with little watt values on multiple channels, we have an offset value to correct this added to the newest GEM Network Utility. You can tweak the offset until they're around 0.

If you could provide some documentation and screen captures that would be great. Trying to fully understand what the impact will be to the overall system.

For example: If I change the offset value so a channel / channels are zero. How will this impact the actual readings in the DB / GEM?

Can this offset be applied to a single channel?

If I use this method can I remove the jumper from the channels that have them? Trying to understand which method is best, with the least negative impact on the accuracy of the system.
