Unable to upgrade GEM COM firmware to 5.13

Post by crazydane » Sun Feb 21, 2021 9:02 am

I have a GEM with an Ethernet Only module that I'm not able to upgrade to the latest COM firmware.

Using GEM Network Utility 8.0, I go to the Firmware tab, click "Get GEM Info". It pull is down just fine.

I then click the "19200" button to change the Com1 Baud to 19200. That caused me to loose the GEM.

I can still ping it on the static IP I assigned it on my router, but I get nothing when I point a browser at port 8000. And of course it has disappeared from the list of Energy Monitors on the Dashbox dashboard.

I also have 2 GEMs that are directly connected to the Dashbox but I'm hesitant to upgrade the firmware on those until I get the issue with the Ethernet module one sorted out.

I’d see if changing the baud rate to 115 makes a difference in connecting.

But in order to do that, I would have to be able to connect from a browser on port 8000 or from the GEM Network Utility, no?

This is as far as I can get right now when I click on the "Get GEM Info" :

I'll dig around in my computer junk drawer to see if I can find my USB to serial adapter and maybe I can get to that GEM via serial.

Was able to connect via USB to serial dongle and see this:

I then upgraded the COM to the latest but afterwards, I was no longer able to connect. The closest I can get is this:

That green "Closed" box is really throwing me off. I figured it should be green when "Open" and red when "Closed".

Throwing in the towel for the day. I for sure won't be attempting to upgrade my other 2 GEMs anytime soon as I can't afford to take any more offline right now.

If it's an early GEM, the GEM doesn't have access to the reset line on the Ethernet module so it can't change settings on it.

After dropping the baud to 19200 on the GEM you have to drop it on the Ethernet module also under the Ethernet tab.

Once it's upgraded to COM5.13 the baud will likely default back to 115200. If you can't communicate after the firmware upgrade make sure you try 115200 on the Ethernet module.

Ok, I dropped the baud rate on the Ethernet Only tab to 19200, and it was able to pull in the info to the Firmware tab as follows:

Image

With that done, what is the process to switch back to 115200, which I assume is where I want to be?

Here's the view from the Ethernet Only tab:

I set the baud back to 115200 while on the Ethernet Only tab and saved, but on the Firmware tab, it still shows 19200 and clicking the 115200 button does nothing.

You have to do the GEM-side first then reconfigure the Ethernet module. F/W loads at 115200 on the new F/W so you'll only have to do this once.

- Set it to the baud you can pull settings with (19200).
- Click Get GEM Info.
- Click 115200.
- Once done, go to the Ethernet tab and set to 115200.

When I set the baud to 19200 (upper arrow), I'm able to save successfully and click Get GEM info successfully. However, nothing happens when I click the 115200 button (lower arrow) while on the Firmware tab.

Are you running it in Administrator mode? (Right-click, go to "Run as Administrator").

Yes.

EDIT: Was finally able to get it by pointing a browser to the GEM while at 19200 and then changing the speed to 115200 from the advanced tab.

My other 2 GEMs are connected directly to my Dashbox. What would be the recommended procedure to get them updated? They are currently on COM 4.33
