Where is the battery on the GEM blue board? I do not see it anywhere on the board .

The black board has a lithium coin cell on the top right of the PCB. The v2 blue board uses a super capacitor instead of the coin cell.

Yes, and at some point it needs to be changed, but that seems to be easier said than done.

It is under another board, so how are you supposed to get the old 2032 battery out, let alone put the replacement battery in? There are no instructions for this anywhere in any manual that I can find.

Is the 2032 battery just necessary when the power goes out? Long ago I wondered if it was the cause for my WiFi not working, but until I put in a new battery I can't tell definitely.

It should only need to be changed if you had old firmware and/or had the hardware option misconfigured (as that'll put a constant load on the battery).

To remove the battery, leave the unit plugged in, and push at the back of it (facing the Xbee header) with a plastic object like a pen lid. It should slide out.

The battery holds the contents of RAM (the wattseconds/seconds/pulse counter values for example). If it's dead, your wattseconds counters will reset to a random value every power cycle.
