Net Alias can't exceed 25 characters error when saving

Post by crazydane » Sat Oct 14, 2017 12:54 pm

So when I initially sent my 1st GEM, I choose Main and Net for both SPLIT-200's. So today when the Sun came out and my solar panels started to generate power, that was being subtracted from my consumption as seen here:

That's not what I want since I don't want my solar production to obscure my actual consumption, so I attempted to uncheck the NET check boxes. But I get the following error when attempting to do so:

Here's what's hiding behind the error message:

So nothing is greater than 25 characters here, so what gives?

Also, I'm pretty sure I'll need to connect a 2nd set of CT's to capture the solar production before the GEM is going to be able to show true consumption vs. solar production.

Still learning the system, but that error message strikes me as odd. I get it even if I try to shorten the channel 1 and 2 names.

The device alias is intended for the Brultech web portal. It's not intended to be used as a description for the channels. The individual channels are used to define (label) those channels. For now label the alias as Dash Box

So I changed everything back to default like so:

Image

But I still get the same error when trying to save.

I think I found the cause, but don't know how to fix it. When I get to channels, I now have 2 "NET" channels from when I checked the Net box (the ones that end in "Gen"). So when you add the descriptions together for the real channel 1 and the NET channel 1, you do indeed exceed 25 characters. Ditto for channel 2.

It also appears that my PT's needs to be adjusted as their appear to be reading 50% of what they should be (they are 240V PTs).

I'll read through the GEM and DB manuals to see if I missed something.

I'm surprised there doesn't appear to be a "factory reset" option so that I can just start over. I do see an option to "remove a device" but I get a warning that it is irreversible, so I'm a little scared to try that, although I would imagine it will just show up again as a new device.

Yes, if you select remove device that is like starting from scratch. What are the values being used for the 240 PT and can you show me what it looks like to confirm. Basically it never came with a AC plug, correct?

I was able to correct the issue with the 25 characters without resetting the GEM. Had to scroll down close to the bottom to see the 2 NET channels and clear their contents.

So on the PT, the default type is 205. I changed it to 480 since I got PT-480's with my GEMs.

Not sure what value to set the PT Range to. It is currently at 3. However when I hit save, I get an error and the PT Type remains at the default 205.

Is the PT you received plugs into a 120 VAC outlet? Because the 240 version comes with bare wires that *normally* connect to a split 240 breaker. Also your values set are for a 120 VAC as seen in your screen capture.

So you need to answer the first question is the PT you have actually a 120 vs 240? Lastly, if you find out its only a 120 PT you can't adjust the PT Type / PT Range.

I have 2 of these (one for each GEM):

http://www.brultech.com/store/index.php ... er=product

PT-480
Potential transformer (PT)
Input: 120Vac to 480Vac
Output: 333mV @ 480Vac input

It has a mini USB on the end that plugs into the GEM. The leads on the other end are connected to a dual breaker (The PT is seeing 240v).

That's perfect . . .

If you increase the PT Type value by one and hit save does that value stick?

Also to offer some clarity the PT Type is for fine tuning. The PT Range will double, triple when you increase / decrease by 1. So change the PT Range to 4 and let me know the value in the voltage section. If it's around 240 great you can then use a True RMS DMM and measure the line.

You will then change the PT Type up / down until it matches in the GEM.

It does. I changed it from 205 to 206 and it stayed. But voltage is still showing ~ 120v.
