COM 4.0 Firmware

Post by Teken » Sat Jul 25, 2015 11:34 pm

Loaded COM 4.0 about five minutes after Paul uploaded it to the site. The GEM is humming along with out any issues to report.

What method are you using to upload the firmware file?

In the manual, it's discussing using the GEM Monitor setup, an application program. I'm seeing a firmware upload button in my browser in the GEM device management page. Then there's the GEM network utility. I'm not clear I'm getting the network utility to connect successfully.

Good to have the best practice before pushing any buttons.

Hello Todd,

I agree with you best practices should be followed to insure the best outcome for all. My apologies if this was not made clear or stated anywhere in the forum.

1. Download the last 5.9 GEM Network Utility Tool located here: http://www.brultech.com/home/software/i ... etsoft/1/1

2. Once the 5.9 GEM Utility Tool is installed on your computer. Launch the tool and on the main page at the lower right is a spy glass which says *Search*. Select this option and it will pre-populate all the network attributes and settings for your GEM.

3. While on the same page under the *COMM Settings* select the *Firmware Mode* and than select *Save Settings* on the lower right.

4. Tab over to the *Firmware Tab in the tool. At the top right is a *Connections* and status window. Select *Open*, then press the Get GEM Info button to the left of it.

Pressing the Get GEM Info will poll the GEM for its current COM / ENG firmware, hardware, baud rate, etc. It will also pre-populate all the settings and attributes of the system on the right hand side of the screen.

If pressing this Get GEM Info tab results in a pop up message. Ignore this nag prompt and select Open again and when the status turns green. You will again press Get GEM Info until it succeeds and gathers all GEM settings.

5. Once the settings have been populated all you need to do at the center of the tool is select under the *Firmware* is where you down loaded the COM 4.0 firmware and load it.

This process will take about 60-120 seconds to complete. Once done the system (GEM) will reboot so please give it about 30 seconds before you try to connect to the GEM again.

6. Once the GEM is up and running again you will go back to the main page of the GEM Network Tool and under the COMM Settings place it back to *Normal* and select save.

That's it . . .

Okay, thanks, that's very helpful. I have the wifi/ethernet combo v.2. It seems that the GEM needs to be in server mode for the network utility tool to connect on my setup. I chased around a bit until I got that figured out. Firmware is uploaded and all seems copacetic.

Hello Todd,

Good to hear it's loaded. Please keep the team updated about the SEG issue and whether the system remains reliable while sending SEG data.

Not sure if it's related to COM 4.0 yet - but my GEM has been having issues reporting to my Dashbox (serial connected) - and this morning it stopped altogether.

I have the DB set to email me on up/down events when data is not seen for 60 seconds. I applied 4.0 COM on 7/27 - and it was stable all that day.

Code: Select all

Device 01000098 down at 2015-07-28 12:03:13
Device 01000098 is back up at 2015-07-28 12:08:17
Device 01000098 down at 2015-07-28 12:14:12
Device 01000098 is back up at 2015-07-28 12:16:34
Device 01000098 down at 2015-07-28 12:21:13
Device 01000098 is back up at 2015-07-28 12:28:38
Device 01000098 down at 2015-07-29 03:26:05
Device 01000098 is back up at 2015-07-29 03:27:22
Device 01000098 down at 2015-08-01 09:08:13
Device 01000098 is back up at 2015-08-01 09:08:21
Device 01000098 down at 2015-08-01 10:38:11
Device 01000098 is back up at 2015-08-01 10:38:19
Device 01000098 down at 2015-08-01 10:57:13
(Observation - the subject line times are UTC - not local - currently UTC-5)

GEM network utility connecting to the Dashbox IP:8001 (which is how I normally connect the network utility) shows 'Connected' (got the socket to the Dashbox) - but when I try 'Get GEM Info' I get an error 'Could not communicate with GEM'.

So - I tried rebooting the GEM. Removed power for 30 seconds - applied it again. Allowed it to come up.

Same results.

Pinging the WiFi interface of the GEM returns responses. But http://gem.ip will not connect - and neither will the GEM network utility.

So - my thought is the COM is dead. Any ideas on what to try next?

Looks like I got my GEM back up by powering down - removing the coin battery and powering back up. I can now connect with the GEM Network Utility as well.

Not sure v4.0 has totally solved the locking up issue - or this is a new one.

Edit: Barely 2 minutes after coming up - the Dashbox again reported:

Code: Select all

Device 01000098 down at 2015-08-01 13:13:13
How can we troubleshoot why the GEM stops sending data to the Dashbox over the serial link? Looks like 2 packets were sent then it stopped (according to the Dashbox raw data).

My GEM Sys Status is showing 'Err1' - and 'Sys Flags' showing '00100000 Error'. Still not sure where to go.

Edit: Saw on another post that Err1 means no battery (which was exactly the state on last boot). So - I inserted the battery and power cycled the GEM. No error now.

Got the following two notifications from Dashbox:

Code: Select all

Device 01000098 is back up at 2015-08-01 13:29:09
Device 01000098 down at 2015-08-01 13:31:11
So - it seems I get one or two packets from GEM then they stop.

Edit2: Seems I was not waiting long enough after disconnecting the GEM web interface. After a couple of minutes - the packets started flowing again and the DB was seeing data again. So: Currently everything is OK. I just don't know why it stopped earlier.

So far now since I got the GEM online to the DB - I have had 5 separate '...is down' and '...is back up' messages from the Dashbox. Something is definitely not happy.

Hello Michael,

Can you provide a screen capture of the following System -> Admin Settings, Change Baud Rate. Also include the screen capture of the GEM's Advanced tab, and the tabs related to the send data.
