A GEM hardware setup basic question

Post by sub3marathonman » Mon Mar 30, 2015 6:08 pm

This seems so basic, I thought it might be addressed somewhere here, but I can't find anything. I think something would be in the manual too if it was harmful, so I'm assuming it can be done, but thought I'd ask.

When installing the CT leads into the GEM, with the CT installed and the breaker returned to ON, is it OK for the GEM to be powered up?

Thanks for the help.

A GEM hardware setup basic question

Ideally all CT's should be inserted while the GEM is powered down. This ensures a errand wire poke or screw driver used to push down the PJ does not touch some random area.

From an electrical stand point it is never a good idea to insert a wire while its under load and the system is active.

You also need to keep in mind ESD from yourself can damage the sensitive electronics within the GEM.

The reality is many people have done this powered up with no ill effects. But you don't want to be the one unlucky guy who got it wrong.

You have more than $500.XX invested so you might want to be mindful of that!

We've tested the GEM with a bunch of different CT types with breakers powered to make sure nothing will damage the GEM when installing the CT leads. You should be fine either way.
