Or do I short it while plugging it in? If so for how long do I short?

Thanks.
The device needs to be plugged in to create a short. Simply place a piece of wire on the contact points indicated by Ben very briefly.

Then, remove power and wait one minute and reapply power to the GEM. At that time you should be able to scan and see the GEM.

Please reply back with your results.

If I short it and then restart the lights go

green orange green orange (pretty fast, I think this correct)

then back to the eight red one green

The green light on the ethernet port flashes every few seconds, no activity on the yellow light.

The server does not appear in wireshark or respond to the wiznet or gem network searches.

I did take it out of static dhcp (and rebooted my router) as I have never seen it in wireshark while that was set.

Using the GEM Network Tool scan for the device and report back.

Sorry realized I left that off and you replied before the edit went in.

Please follow the steps outlined by Ben to place the device in recovery mode. Using the GEM Network Tool v6 please reply back if you're able to scan and see the device.

The status led stays red. The ethernet green light blinks every 2 or 3 seconds. Nothing in wireshark or on wiznet or gem scan.

OK, lets try something else and please confirm if you will.

1. How is the GEM connected to your network? Directly to the router, or through a switch?

2. Do you have a laptop?

3. Do you have a cross over cable?

I have a couple of options that I have tried.

ZyXel GS1100-16 unmanaged switch
http://www.zyxel.com/us/en/products_ser ... .shtml?t=p

With one cable to a faceplate to cat5 to another faceplate to a cable to the GEM. This is what worked during that glorious period Saturday afternoon.

I also have one much longer cable that can go directly from the switch to the GEM.

Previously I tried to connect using the 192.168.2.1 and 2.2 connection through an Ether H16 which is a rackmount 10baseT switch.

I will give the short restart a try using the longer direct connection and let you know.

I do have laptops but I do not have any crossover cables.

I tried the longer cable, shorted, and started up in recovery mode.

The red light and green light are solid. The ethernet green light is solid and the yellow light blinks a couple of times a second.

Nothing shows up on wireshark or wiznet or gem searches.

If I need a crossover cable I can wire one up later tonight once I get back from bowling.
