No GEM-E on Network Scan
My GEM-E arrived Friday and I got it all hooked up and reporting to SEG and everything was great.
Sunday I powered down my house to add two more Micro 40s. After turning everything back on the Network tool would not find it on a search.
A couple of times I did see it show up on my router's listing of dhcp clients under a different ip address than it initially had. I performed a reset and I have not seen it claim an ip address since. I tried to hook it up directly to another computer but no luck.
With wireshark the only traffic I am seeing is some packets from 0.0.0.0 so this may be similar to the issue at
How to factory default the Wiznet ethernet module on a GEM?
http://www.brultech.com/home/community/ ... f=3&t=1229
I will try the search with the wiznet config tool once I get home tonight.
Two questions. First,
What is the correct sequence of resets to get everything to factory reset? The various means I have tried are:
1. Wiznet reset button for 6 seconds
2. Indented reset button in the middle of the mainboard that I do not see mentioned in any manuals.
3. PB for 6 seconds, hold down for two seconds during red led cycle.
4. PB for 6 seconds, hold down for two seconds during yellow led cycle.
5. PB on startup to go into firmware mode
After each of these I have also power cycled by removing the adapter for a minute and then reinserting. What order should I be doing all of this in?
Second,
In the ethernet config manual it says for a direct connection to set the windows server as gateway 192.168.2.1 and dns 192.168.2.1
In the firmware config manual for ethernet it says for a direct connection to set the windows server as gateway 192.168.2.2 and dns 192.168.2.2
Which of these is correct or does it matter?
Hey thanks for your assistance and for this product. I really liked it for the twenty or so hours I had it working.

Re: No GEM-E on Network Scan
First thing I would try is putting the GEM into recovery mode. You can do this by removing power, holding down the button at the bottom of the GEM, plugging it back in, then releasing.
The left LED (Sys LED) will be red, this means it's in recovery mode. While in Recovery Mode, the GEM has no control over the Ethernet module. If you still can't see it, at least you know it's not the GEM doing anything to the Ethernet module.
There's no way to reset the module as the UDP configuration should work regardless of what the module has set. If you can't see it when searching, I would try a second computer if you can to make sure the UDP requests aren't being blocked.
The last problem could be the power supply. If you can try a 2nd 5V supply, you can eliminate that as the issue.

Re: No GEM-E on Network Scan
Perfect, I will give that a try tonight.
When I opened the box there were two of the 5v power supplies so now I know what the other one was for.
Thanks for the quick response.

The other transformer is to measure the line voltage from your home. It is not a PSU to power the GEM unless you're saying you have two identical units.TaltosDM wrote:Perfect, I will give that a try tonight.

Yeah I have two 5v and one 12v. The second 5v was in the part of the box that is labelled hardware on the quick start guide pdf.

That is like the lottery you better go out and by a ticket! Please do report back as to how you get on later.TaltosDM wrote:Yeah I have two 5v and one 12v.

Re: No GEM-E on Network Scan
I have tried with both power supplies in both recovery mode and regular mode on two computers, one with dhcp and one with a direct connection through a different switch. I have turned off windows firewall on both computers.
Neither the gem network utility nor the wiznet utility find anything on a search.
I am going to try running wireshark on the dhcp network to see if I can see anything with the mac address of the wiznet board.
Any other suggestions? I am glad to reset things in any specified order or take a video of the startup sequence of led's.
Thanks.

Re: No GEM-E on Network Scan
I made some slight progress with the following sequence:
Pull power.
Plug back in while holding down main board inset center reset button for 5 seconds
Push bottom pb 4 times, hold 2 seconds while on red
Unplug/replug network cable (probably not necessary)
Push bottom pb 4 times, hold 2 seconds while on yellow
Unplug/replug network cable (possibly not necessary)
Then the status led goes red for less than a minute, followed by an eight red flash one green flash loop with ethernet activity. Wireshark shows it assigning a dhcp address: And my router shows it as a dhcp client:
Host Name IP Address MAC Address Client Lease Time Delete
GainSpand42467 192.168.1.133 00:1D:C9:D4:24:67 1 day 00:00:00
Unfortunately neither the wiznet tool nor the gem network tool can find it on a search or with a direct ip, even with the firewall off. nmap and ping from a linux box do not seem to be able to connect.

Re: No GEM-E on Network Scan
As I indicated to another member please reserve the IP address to the MAC address to the GEM while it is in DHCP mode.
Reboot the router then the GEM once the router comes back up.
Report back the results.
