GEM connection to Smart Energy Groups (SEG)
I've read a few post of other users commenting on their Wifi only GEM loosing its internet connection. I don't think I'm loosing a TCP connection but my GEM randomly stops sending data to Smart Energy Groups (SEG) for roughly 3 hours and then it will reconnect and start sending data.
I noticed when the GEM is "offline" (per SEG) and I attempt to directly connect to it via its dedicated IP address - the browser is populated with the string of data that is sent to SEG...and not the standard GreenEye Monitor login page.
However, if I refresh the webpage, the GEM starts sending data back to GEM and the device is registered as back online...and the standard GEM login webpage appears.
On another noted, I have tried setting the "Idle Time" (found in Adv tab) to 0 as Ben has mentioned that this will ensure a persistent connection (not sure if this would help with my SEG problem). However I can't seem to make the value of 0 stick. I enter 0 and and it says it's changing the interval but a value of 6 is saved..not zero.
Am I missing something? Am I in the wrong section?
About my GEM:
COM firmware ver: 3.16
ENG firmware ver: 1.49
RealTime Status: ON
Packet Send Interval: 45
Pri. Packet Format: 14
Sec. Packet Format: 0
Thanks for your help,
Cliff

I would update the GEM's COM firmware. Hard reboot the unit and monitor the situation from there.

It is sporadic - I've gone a few weeks with none. but it's been happening daily for the past few days and it's always for 3-4 hours...then magically fixes itself if I don't catch it sooner.Teken wrote:I would update the GEM's COM firmware. Hard reboot the unit and monitor the situation from there.

What is a "hard reboot"? is that different from pulling the power and plugging it back in?

Once you update the COM firmware on the GEM. You can perform one of several things to ensure the GEM is behaving.
In the advanced tab you can reset the COM, Engine, and I think the wireless?
Once the unit comes back up you can simply unplug the power from GEM and wait about 1 minute.
Apply power and let it come back up. Is the wireless on the GEM assigned a fixed IP address?
Do you ever see it dropping off the network?

The unit is on a fixed IP address. As of this morning it did drop from the network (I could not ping or connect to it). The GEM had a solid green light and the second light was blinking amber. After unplugging the unit it booted back up without any problems and connected back to my network.

Hello,
How far is the GEM in relations to the wireless router? Also, when the GEM drops off please confirm that its not visible in the routers as a listed wireless device.
Does the wireless GEM have an external antenna? If so can you please change its position (doesn't matter where) just change its current orientation.
Is the GEM's antenna upside down or is the GEM positioned side ways?

What's your auto reset and no response timers set to?

Re: GEM connection to Smart Energy Groups (SEG)
The GEM is about 50 ft (15 meters) from the router. Router is on the first floor and GEM is in the basement corner by electrical box.ben wrote:What's your auto reset and no response timers set to?
The GEM does have an external antenna and I have just changed it's position. The unit is right-side up (antenna pointing towards the ceiling).
It's odd - like I said before this problem is very intermittent and after it happens a few times it will stop for several weeks. Then happen again a few days in a row, then stop.
My auto reset and no response timers set to 0.
Also as you can see the Idle time shows a value of 6 in the web interface... but if I use the GEM Network Utility and get the info that way - it show an idle time of 0 as you can see from the screen print below.
I have clicked on the "Read Idle Time (Caution!)" button but that does not change anything.

Re: GEM connection to Smart Energy Groups (SEG)
I'd turn on COM1 Auto Reset, set it to 16 (we've had a few of ours set to 16 for awhile without any interruptions).
Also disable COM1 Flow Control.

Re: GEM connection to Smart Energy Groups (SEG)
I had a similar issue with the one reported here. The connection to SEG dropped twice: approximately 3 days after I first turned it on and approximately 3 days after I reset it.
I have a WiFi/Ethernet module and am using the WiFi connection.
Per your recommendation I set COM1 to Auto Reset and disabled Flow Control. I've now made it past 4 days. Hopefully that did the trick. I will post again if I have any problems again.
Thanks
