Wired Ethernet not connecting

Post by depasseg » Sat Sep 27, 2014 6:27 pm

I have a GEM with wireless and wired connections. It used to be only connected via wireless but I recently added a wired Ethernet cable to it. I can see the link light appear on the GEM and the switch, but I don't see a new IP address on the network.

What do I have to do for the system to use the wired connection instead of the wireless one?

Thanks,
Greg

Hello Greg,

I don't have a WiFi / Ethernet module so some of this may be pure guess work on my part.

1. Have you assigned a static address for the GEM's Ethernet module via the network tool? If not, please do so and scan for the new IP address on your router. I have found on my LinkSys router that it takes a long time for the GEM to appear on the network (icon) yet in reality it is on the LAN.

2. Once you have assigned an static IP address to the GEM via the GEM Network Tool. Reboot the GEM and the router. It should at that time list the Ethernet connected device on your LAN.

3. Google for a network scanner and see if it shows up in any of the software tools. This will at least confirm that the GEM is programmed correctly and is reachable.

4. Once you have assigned an Static IP address to the GEM. Launch CMD and ping the device by entering ping (IP Address). This will confirm its on the LAN for sure and reachable.

Follow this with a ping XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX -t this will ping continuously and show the time it takes for the GEM to reply back indefinitely.

I configured the wired address when I first got it but then used wireless once it was installed in it's current location. I haven't used it since.

It doesn't show up in the GEM Network Utility tool.

It doesn't show up on a ping sweep.

It doesn't respond to pinging of its address.

And since there isn't any network setup info on the GEM itself, I have no idea how to reconfigure it.

The users manual will indicate all the required steps to make a tethered connection.

Having said this, if you use the GEM Network Tool you can set the Ethernet settings from there .

Reset the module using the push button method on the module (I think it's hold it down for 6 seconds, release). Cycle power, it should start up in AP mode and Ethernet should work.

If not, report back with the firmware version on your WiFi/Ethernet module.
