GEM connection via DB

Post by rnoble » Mon Feb 24, 2014 8:13 am

So I recently completed the hardware installation of my GEM/DB and am currently studying the setup before I plug the unit in. I opted for a serial connection between the GEM and DB for an affordable and solid connection. My question comes in setting up the GEM via the DashBox. Page 4 of the GEM Configuration Manual (GEM-CFG, v3.1) refers to GEM Setup Via DashBox (GEM-SET-DB) which I'm unable to find. Can someone either point me towards that document, or provide a brief description of how to access the GEM via the DB?

All you need to do is use the IP address of the Dash Box (DB) and add the following ports: 8001, 8002. This depends on what COM channel the DB is using to connect to the GEM.

Please keep in mind there really isn't much difference in accessing the GEM via its own direct IP vs using the DB and entering 192.168.1.X:8001 or 192.168.1.X:8002.

Comes down to preference and use case really.

Perfect. Thank you!

I'm very familiar with network protocol, this should be a piece of cake.

Just a note, the Serial-TCP bridge between the two devices can be a bit buggy. I'm working on improving the functionality. Once in Setup mode it works pretty well.

If you ever get stuck "Waiting...", it's likely the HTTP header got messed up. You can try a stop/refresh a few times, if that doesn't work copy the link you were trying to access and open it in a new window (close the old window).

What packet format do I use with a STS cable between my GEM & DB?

I'm seeing live data on my GEM, but nothing seems to be making it to my DB.

Your GEM must be set to packet format 4 (Bin-NET-Time) in order to use the STS cable

Any reason one of my channels would read 16W when I know it has no load?

Hello Ryan,

Please refer to this resource link at the very bottom about the FAQ for the GEM: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=929&start=40

Please ensure all of the channels are set correctly for the CT values as a starter. Should you need to add in a jumper wire into any channel please ensure the GEM is powered down and disconnected to ensure no possible damage to the unit.

Please also ensure the line voltage in your home is reflective in the GEM. If not, please adjust the PT Type either in the GEM or Dash Box. This will fine tune the voltage to your home and be more accurate.

If you're not on the latest GEM COM / Engine please do so. You should also be on the latest Beta release of the DB to ensure all features and bugs have been squished and resolved.

The GEM is on COM: 2.55, Engine: 1.47. The Dash Box (DB) is on 4.1.5B which you will need to send an e-mail to Ben to obtain.

Thank you! Very Helpful. Another question...

I've setup remote access to my DB via port forwarding (external port 600) through my firewall to port 80 of the DB. I was under the assumption that I could access my gem by forwarding to port 8001 of my DB, but it doesn't seem to work. Suggestions on how I can access my GEM remotely?

Thanks again!
