My GEM Install

Just thought I'd share some pictures of my GEM install.

I'm monitoring 32 circuits + Main with 28-M40's, 5-M80's and 2-Split 200's on 32 channels.

I've had it in for about 2 weeks now, have the standalone dashboard working and also sending data to SEG.

I'm still waiting on some temperature sensors form Hong Kong. Good ol Canada Post has had them in the country for 16 days now.

My main goal is to reduce my energy consumption and have started gathering data to do that. It's pretty neat being able to see exactly where the power is going.

Getting ready to install the GEM I was inspired to clean up the wiring around the box. I just moved into this house 2 years ago and the quality of the wiring job left a little to be desired. Combined with multiple telecom/cable/internet company installations that were not being used anymore.

Finished install (except for temp sensors). I relocated all the network/telecom gear, got rid of what wasn't being used and installed a new 120V circuit/plugs to power it all.

You did a fantastic clean up job on that wall and wiring mess! :P I would suggest you install a small UPS to keep the GEM powered and protected during any brief power events that may occur.

Thanks. Messy wiring is one of my pet peeves.

Good idea on the UPS. Do you know if you can get units that can be hardwired in? That way it could serve the GEM, Router and Telecom.

Hello Dan,

The ones that are normally hard wired cost a lot more than a plug and play affair. If cost is not an issue you can look up APC, Tripplite, etc

If you have not reviewed my installation thread I offer insight as to some of the surge protection devices in my home. I use all three levels of protection to ensure the most robust and coverage in the home. Those are Type 1, 2, 3, surge protectors.

Installing a point of use (Type 3) surge outlet serves two purposes. One, it allows a clean install and second it provides a narrower voltage range protection not offered by Type 1/2.

Coupling that with a UPS obviously allows back up power in case of a power event. Note, a UPS will not provide adequate protection during a sag (brown out) event. As many off the shelf UPS are not designed provide stable frequency & power unlike a power conditioner.

Please note GEM's PT transformer is not supposed to be placed on a UPS. This is why I installed a point of use surge outlet to protect the PT against a surge event. While the GEM's power transformer was placed behind isolated power transformer which also serves as a UPS system.
