closeup of the rest of equipment

still not sure what the final placement should be, for example should I get an equipment box installed embedded into the wall etc. anyone have experience of doing that?

Things to do (some just ideas rather than intention)

1) Install and mount the raspberrypi for DSClink
2) switch gem and DB over to Ethernet from wifi
3) figure out how the hell to route the Ethernet for the cameras I want to put outside into this same area
4) figure out how to route the white Ethernet cable from the router neatly to another Ethernet point (currently it strings out of the door and across the mancave)
5) mount the DSC alarm panel wireless unit (the little white box that communicates with sensors)
6) figure out if I can power multiple 5v devices from a single USB bus / transformer / hub
7) replace the strip power with proper wall power

and of course

get the CT leads routed and fitted properly :-)

Hello Scyto,

If the visuals are important to you as they are for most folks. I would humbly suggest you purchase a very large HA Box to enclose a few of the units. You could certainly use two panels to enclose the alarm panel equipment. The key problems you're going to run into is anything that is Wifi, RF, Zigbee, Z-Wave.

You're going to have to balance between a stealth install vs consistent COM's.

In my network installation, everything is hardwired and WiFi is simply used as a secondary back up. As much as I like a clean install consolidating all the PSU for various devices leaves you extremely vulnerable to a single point of failure.

I would keep all the equipment powered by their respective PSU's. The only thing I would suggest is that you provide redundant power to the DB, GEM, ISY, etc. To protect it from power fluctuations and surge / spike conditions.

Going with a flush mounted housing is a personal decision and obviously the cost, effort, will reflect the final bill. Only you can decide if the effort is worth the gain. My opinion is that you're only going to do this once so might as well break up some drywall to keep that clean and stealth look.

The key issues is that you must plan ahead and ensure any future expansion is taken into account. Where as with a surface mounted enclosure you can make any changes at will with out fear of breaking up more dry wall.

In closing I find it beneficial to draw out a room with the equipment at hand. This allows you to envision where everything should go with out the headaches of doing something over and over again.

Thanks, not too bothered about all the little boxes being visible more just the leads.

My father used to work in UK telecoms many years ago, he suggested what they did years ago - mount a large (hinged) wooden board to the wall put the objects on one side of the board and the mess behind it :-)

It is unlikely I have the depth in the drywall for full enclosure as there is concrete wall behind the drywall (though I need to verify). I may get a friendly by the hour electrician to help me out...

A floating hidden wall is a most excellent idea for sure. This is what I did for my secure room and plan on expanding it further when time permits.

I had to balance between NEC / CEC rules where the panel had to be clear and accessible when required. This is why I used a *Push & Slide* panel configuration.

This allows what *appears* to be a solid wall when in fact its not, but a movable and sliding wall like a pocket door some people have in their homes. I just used similar design and engineering elements to achieve the same outcome.

Well, that is of course with my stealth flair!

I have almost the same situation as scyto, where the electrical panel is on one wall and the GEM would be around a corner on another wall, and have neglected my project for awhile now because of it.

I'd be interested to see the "Push & Slide" panel setup, and if you were able to build it yourself from any plans.

My idea has been to use a board, on an upper and lower small wooden square "rail" to give a "conduit" to where I would install the GEM, which would be, as scyto's, in the corner using something similar to a false "door" that would be hinged and have "the mess" behind it. I haven't found a nice baseboard to use, and really just wanted to get a length of wood and have a nice edge routed into the upper and lower edge, but don't have a router and have never used one before.

For those really interested in how this *Push & Slide* panel works can see this at any Ikea store. This is where I (stole / borrowed) the idea for my secure room.

Because the panel wall is so wide I had to come up with a method that did not include a out swinging hinged door. This is why the push & slide panel door concept was brought to bare. Traditional sliding doors always have the appearance of being there.

In my configuration, anyone looking at the wall would simply believe its a plain wall. The difference are in the details along with a fantastic magnetic lock system which I (borrowed) from a gun case product.
