Determine a
threshold power value. This is a value that you know will be less than
that of the load, but large enough not to cause false triggering by
fluctuations in household power.
For example,
all of your Christmas lights are on one circuit and you want to detect the
increase in power when you plug in the extension cord powering the lights.
Suppose you have three or four strings of lights you may want to set the
threshold to 88 watts.
